New Entrant Enrolment: At Sumner School, we have a Cohort Entry Policy for all New Entrant ākonga (learners). Cohort Entry means that we transition students from their early childhood environment to primary school in groups or cohorts. Children are able to start Sumner School in cohorts but only after they have turned 5. There are two entry points per term, one on the first day of term, and one at a mid-point during a term. Please note: This would mean that New Entrants would start on the first Monday of the term and the Monday of Week 6 in each term. New Entrants turning 5 a day later would need to wait until the next Cohort Entry date. Parents are able to choose a later Cohort Entry point as long as their child begins school before their sixth birthday. More information and Cohort Entry dates for the year can be found on the Ministry of Education website.
All children enrolled will be invited to two pre-entry visits where they meet their teacher and participate in the class environment. During these visits, parents will have the opportunity to meet with the Rapanui Team Leader or our Deputy Principal to discuss our transition to the school programme.
