Welcome to Sumner School
Connecting with our people, our learning and our place
We are a Years 0-8 Primary School nestled in the heart of the seaside community of Sumner.
Our Tūrangawaewae (identity and standing place) and Cultural Narrative highlight the importance of Rapanui (Shag Rock), Tuawera (Cave Rock), Te Onepoto (Taylors Mistake) and Awaroa (Godley Head). These enduring landmarks and places of deep significance for local iwi acted as signposts, skillfully guiding and pointing them in the direction so that they could locate places that were abundant with kaimoana (seafood)and other valuable resources.
As our ākonga (learners) navigate their way through our school they gather resources for growth and learning. We use our understanding of our learners and their unique Character Strengths to carefully guide them through our teaching teams of Rapanui (Years 0-2), Tuawera (Years 3 and 4), Te Onepoto (Years 5 and 6) and Awaroa (Years 7 and 8); the highest of the landmarks where they can look out on the wider world while feeling empowered as learners and ready to move to High School.

PTA UPDATE – We need your help…
Mon May 23 02:54pmKia ora e te whānau,
We need your help!
We are running very low on members at the moment and so are sending out a survey (linked below) to find out how we can make it easier for parents to get involved with the PTA. Over the last 10 years Sumner School PTA has provided funding for building the school hall, the Years 3&4 playground, our wonderful school library and our new shade sails.
We are currently raising funds to pay for decodable reading books and resources for Structured Literacy which the school does not receive Ministry funding for. We’d also love to build a pump track on the school field as part of the next phase of fundraising. But we can’t achieve these things without you!
Many hands really do make light work and we want to continue to raise funds for the school that will support our children’s learning and experiences while at Sumner School.
We would really appreciate you taking 5 minutes to complete the survey below so we can figure out how to get this thing humming again.
Ngā mihi,
Sumner School PTA
Vandalism at school over the weekend…
Sun May 22 03:04pmKia ora e te whānau,
Unfortunately we had some incidents of vandalism at school on Friday night. This included graffiti using inappropriate language in spray paint on the pavement outside of school and on the side of our library. This is obviously really disappointing and I know you will all share our frustration with this. We have images from our CCTV cameras that have been passed onto the Police, but in the meantime if anyone knows anything about this please could you contact the school.
We will be working to remove the graffiti over the next couple of days but in the meantime, many thanks for your continued support and for continuing to help look after our school. It is really appreciated.
