Welcome to Sumner School
Connecting with our people, our learning and our place
We are a Years 0-8 Primary School nestled in the heart of the seaside community of Sumner.
Our Tūrangawaewae (identity and standing place) and Cultural Narrative highlight the importance of Rapanui (Shag Rock), Tuawera (Cave Rock), Te Onepoto (Taylors Mistake) and Awaroa (Godley Head). These enduring landmarks and places of deep significance for local iwi acted as signposts, skillfully guiding and pointing them in the direction so that they could locate places that were abundant with kaimoana (seafood)and other valuable resources.
As our ākonga (learners) navigate their way through our school they gather resources for growth and learning. We use our understanding of our learners and their unique Character Strengths to carefully guide them through our teaching teams of Rapanui (Years 0-2), Tuawera (Years 3 and 4), Te Onepoto (Years 5 and 6) and Awaroa (Years 7 and 8); the highest of the landmarks where they can look out on the wider world while feeling empowered as learners and ready to move to High School.

A reminder that you can check on Hero if you have paid by clicking ‘View Donation Payments’ and clicking 2022. We would appreciate immediate payment if your child has participated but not yet paid. IMPORTANT: Teacher Paid Union Meeting Notification – School Closed from 12.30pm on 24th November.
Wed Nov 02 03:58pmKia ora e te whānau,
Sumner School Board has been notified that the teachers in our school will be attending a Paid Union Meeting on the afternoon of 24 November to discuss the progress of negotiations for their collective employment agreements. This is an entitlement as part of their Collective Agreement.
The proposed unified public service pay offer and their Wāwāhi Tahā | Time 4 Tamariki campaign aims to win smaller class sizes, more support for high needs students, better recognition of cultural skills, greater job security for our essential relievers and to fairly value and recognise the work of teachers.
In order for teachers to attend this meeting school will be closed from 12.30pm on Thursday 24th November. We understand the inconvenience that this may cause some families, but as all our teachers will be attending the union meeting for health and safety reasons we are unable to keep the school open. Please organise for your child to be collected at this time. We are working with Mash to confirm supervision from 12.30pm. More information to follow.
Ngā mihi nui, Sumner School Board.
